Those in search of Italian cuisine while in Dumaguete should pay a visit to Pasta King. This restaurant, which is located at the corner of Sta. Catalina St. and Dr. V. Locsin St., is known for its yummy pizzas and pastas. The restaurant provides ample parking for its customers, which is definitely a plus.
My visit to this restaurant fell on meryenda time, at around 4:00 PM. The nice thing about coming at this time is that there aren’t too many people around, so you get some peace and quiet. The Italian-inspired interior of Pasta King makes the restaurant a nice place to hang out, whether you’re alone or with some friends.
I had to find a table for myself, and once I was seated a server approached me with a menu. It took several minutes for my food to arrive after I had ordered, but the fact that the food was hot and freshly cooked made up for the brief wait.
I really liked my order of Linguine Aglio Olio, which consists of garlic, extra virgin olive oil, and chili flakes. This comes in two sizes, regular at PHP119, and large at PHP209. I only had a regular sized serving, and that was tasty and satisfying enough to be worth the cost.
One unique item served at Pasta King menu, which fuses a touch of our local cuisine with their Italian menu, is the Bicol Express Pasta. I got excited over this offering as soon as I saw it, because who doesn’t love Bicol Express? Plus, I love the idea of making this beloved dish better and more exciting with noodles. Sadly, it wasn’t as spicy as I hoped it would be, and was also on the oily side. It is filling and worth the price, though, at PHP179 for a regular serving, and PHP299 for large.
I made sure not to leave until I had tried something off their dessert menu. My sweet treat of choice was the tiramisu, which sadly failed to live up to my expectations. It looked really nice, and at PHP55 for a regular size and PHP99 for a large serving, it seems worth it.
There’s too much alcohol in their recipe for my taste, though, which is why I am not a fan. I think that this is all a matter of personal preference, and while the taste may not work for me, it might be good for others. If alcohol-taste isn’t really your thing, skip this and order the blueberry cheesecake instead.
Overall, Pasta King serves reasonably priced dishes, which are satisfying to the taste. The restaurant is open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM from Mondays through Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays, they are open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. On Sundays they open late, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
