Backyard Kitchen + Brew: A Healthy Twist to Comfort Food

American restaurants are chock-full of hearty dishes, but anything organic is easily off the table. Luckily for me, Backyard Kitchen + Brew offers the traditional American-style restaurants we’ve come to know and love, and offers something even more: organic dishes from grass-fed, preservative-free meat. Who says that the land notorious for fast food and GMO’s can’t be organic too? Healthy takes a turn for the better with the perfect marriage of American comfort food and a guilt-free, organic diet.

As their name suggests, the establishment is both a restaurant and a bar. Offering unique events each day such as Marga Mondays, Banana Wednesdays, and Indie Nights, among others, the place provides a relaxing venue for people like me who wants to de-stress. And it’s easy to relax and unwind at their restaurant—the interiors, lined up with grass walls and lots of wood panels, give off a posh Western setting that only gets better as the sun sets and the events begin.

My quick visit to the restaurant gave me time to sample two bestsellers: their Backyard Burger (Php 345) and their Pizzookie (Php 385). Both have their unique tastes, including the dessert, which I will dive into later. For now, let’s talk about their first star of the show.

The Backyard Burger is an interesting combination of a hearty beef patty, parmesan crisp, and sriracha ketchup over tomato, onion, and arugula. Quite the towering affair, I was excited to taste the combination of flavors and ended up pleased with what I tasted. The patty was tender, very juicy and flavorful. What makes it better is the parmesan crisp and sriracha ketchup. These two added saltiness, texture and the spicy kick that complemented the beef patty very well. The burger comes out a balanced but entertaining affair, a portmanteau of crispy, soft, juicy, and flavorful.

Desserts are usually ordinary ventures that are not that exciting. However, Backyard themselves promised that they never leave out sweet endings, so I picked their highly recommended Pizzookie, which is basically a warm cookie cake splayed over a pan with vanilla ice cream on top. With just one bite, I fell in love. Soft, sweet, warm, and delicious, the Pizzookie is one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted in this organic food adventure. With the sweet aroma of chocolate chip wafting from the surface, it was hard not to eat more of this mouthwatering dessert. On normal occasions, desserts are the end of the dining experience. However, the Pizzookie almost steals the spotlight from the main course—it is simply that amazing.

Check out these other food selections that are well recommended too: Backyard Burger (Php 345), Pizzookie (Php 385), Butter Beer (Php 165), Kitayama T-Bone Steak (Php995), Grilled Cheese with Pulled Pork Sandwich (Php 325), Roasted Beef Belly Salpicao Rice Bowl (Php 435). I couldn’t stay long enough to experience their night events, but a sample of their food only makes me want to return to this restaurant and bar, which happens to be organic as well. I loved how savory the burger was and how the spice added a new twist to the burger. The dessert also made me wish I could’ve stayed longer, but it only guarantees a revisit. Sometimes, splurging on organic food can be a very delicious affair.
