Dumaguete’s Rizal Boulevard is lined with bars and lounges that come alive at night. Among these is Blue Monkey Grill, a place you can come to for a few drinks and some live music. This popular hangout spot is found at the corner of Rizal Ave. and Siliman Ave.
I arrived at Blue Monkey Grill at 8:30 PM during one of my evenings in the city. When I got there, a band was already onstage performing for the guests. I love the diversity of the songs on their set list, and the fact that they take song requests from the audience. Though the sound quality was average, the fun energy that the band members radiated as they performed was infectious.
While at Blue Monkey Grill, I ordered two dishes off their menu. I chose to snack on their Sizzling Potatoes, which is basically French fry cut potatoes served on a sizzling plate with gravy. This is a dish best eaten hot, as it gets soggy when cold as fries tend to do. I also ordered Sizzling Gambas, which was nice and spicy. The serving was a little small, though, for its price tag of PHP185. This, too, is a dish that you should eat as soon as it’s served.
As for the cocktails, there are only two on the menu, and I chose to sample one called the Boracay Latte. It’s served by the pitcher, and tastes nice. It’s definitely perfect for a night out.
The ambiance and the overall experience at Blue Monkey Grill were wonderful, but I feel that there is still some room for improvement as far as the food here goes. I would still come, though, when I want to give myself some time to chill out and unwind after a long day.
